Compressors are mechanical devices used to increase the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. Air compressors are specific types of gas compressors. Similar to pumps, compressors can both increase the pressure on a fluid and transmit the fluid through a pipe in order to convert it into a form of useful energy. This is very ideal in cases where pressurized air is of importance such as cooling systems, buildings, mines, construction sites amongst others.

Air compressors fall into two main categories based on their internal mechanisms and these are positive displacement and dynamic displacement.

The following are the four main types of compressors:

• Reciprocating compressors;
• Rotary Screw compressors;
• Axial compressors; and
• Centrifugal compressors.
